False MOTs at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency; 12 arrests

The Public Prosecutor’s Office, in Varese, and the Traffic Police of Verbania are shedding light on hundreds of MOTs that were falsified by a number of civil servants upon payment. Two owners of vehicle licensing agencies, in Varese and Castellanza, are also in trouble.

Motor ordinance tests (MOTs) of at least one hundred cars and trucks were apparently falsified upon payment. This is one of the charges contained in the 12 orders of arrest issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in Varese, and carried out by the Traffic Police of Verbania, against 8 residents of Varese Province, and 4, of Verbania
Province.

The operation began on Friday morning, and in the evening, the searches were still in progress. The inquiry, which began also following a complaint made by a private individual, is shedding light on a series of crimes committed by the alleged criminal association, such as embezzlement, extortion, corruption and forgery by the Varese Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

A number of engineers in the Varese DVLA, who apparently agreed, upon payment, to falsify the MOT data, and two owners of vehicle licensing agencies (one in Varese, and the other in Castellanza), who apparently corrupted the officials and approved dozens of files brought to them by private individuals, also ended up in the Public Prosecutor’s net.

From the inquiries, it emerged that hundreds of MOTs had been falsified; the MOTs often had inconsistent data, which the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in Varese, and the traffic police, in Verbania, have been checking, over the last few months, by comparing  the MOTs and reconstructing the various steps. In some cases, even the licence plates were incorrect. Apparently, this is not the first time that these kinds of offence have been committed in the DVLA; over the years, several inquiries have been carried out throughout Italy.
