There are going to be five days of studies in four cities, connected by a strong link with a kingdom that is unexpectedly close to us.

The conference about Teodolinda and the Longobards will develop across three centuries and it will last five days.
The studies are taking place from December 2th to December 7th in Monza, Gazzada Schianno, Castelseprio and Cairate.

Teodolinda has a royal ancestry and a delicate beauty. According to Paolo Diacono, the character of Queen Teodolinda is the crux of the research project promoted by Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Centro studi longobardi (Research facility about longobards) that are financed by the European Social Fund of Lombardy.

The topic is historical – institutional and focused on the best tradition about research on Middle Ages, that develops within a wider path, connected with the esteem thanks to the scientific research of the serial website UNESCO: “Longobards in Italy, Places of Power (568 – 774 A.D),” with a particular attention to the to the archeological complex of Castelseprio – Torba and the small Church of Santa Maria “foris portas”.

The political – religious and European cultural context in which the catholic queen, with Bavarian origins, lived, is linked to a monumental reality that is one of the most interesting and discussed of the Seprio area, discovered more than fifty years ago thanks to the intuition of Gian Pietro Bogetti.

THE SCIENCE PROJECT – The project, which engages a lot of European Universities and many young students, has some applications that are directly available to the general public, which are bound to communicate the results of the surveys.

In this way, the many aspects are linked with the current needs to reflect on the past, which continues to tickle the current society. These aspects concern: the problems about the first evangelisation and the pontificate of Gregorio Magno; The Three-Chapter Controversy; the relations with the Byzantine East; the Italian and insular monasticism in its different demonstrations; and, eventually, the image that consigned to the history the memory of the Queen Teodolinda.

THE PLACES – History and modernity remain inseparable. The academic study is connected with the expectations of the local communities and their growth, with the participation of Regione Lombardia, in the spread of the cultural value of the UNESCO heritage. Speaking about Castelseprio is not only an expression of the continuity of the work of historians, but also of its social declinations that, for example in the artistic field, have led to the most recent and magnificent restoration of the Teodolinda’s shrine in the Monza Cathedral and to its promotion.

PARTNERS – The meeting, which has the support of the Italian National Commission of the UNESCO, ICOMOS and FAI (an Italian Environmental Foundation – Fondo Ambiente Italiano – and an Archaeological Authority of Lombardia), is organized in collaboration with the CISAM Foundation of Spoleto and the most important public and cultural institutions of the area of Serpio.
