The Wikipedia world meeting is organised in Varese

The usual comparison between David and Goliath this time has one more raison d’être. The small Esino Lario, with its 700 inhabitants, has beaten Manila and other metropolis in the challenge to welcome the most important Wikipedia annual event.

A thousand participants, developers, editors and mere enthusiasts of the most-known worldwide collaborative knowledge portal will gather from the 21^st to 28^th June 2016 in the area around Lucca for the Wikimania 2016. On that week a series of conferences, encounters and workshops and programming sessions are planned with the common objective of improving Wikipedia and demonstrating that it is possible to produce knowledge everywhere also thanks to the new technologies.

Also two companies of the province of Varese will contribute in the organisation of the event. Elmec of Brunello will provide the IT infrastructure for the whole event, from the work places to printers, to the virtual servers and the computational ability of the new data centre. And, for the occasion, the historical company of Varese has implemented a “ready for use” option that will allow organisers and participants to work with the best technologies of the field from the small town of Esino Lario.

Eolo, which is based in Busto Arsizio, will give instead a broadband connection, 1Gbps, to the event, bringing optical fibre in a zone, otherwise, isolated: an important investment, by which will benefit also the Esino Lario community, after the event.

Thanks to their intervention, Varese will host Iolanda Pensa, General Manager Wikimania 2016 and she will be the protagonist of the awaited for event of the week of Esino Lario.

The date will take place on Wednesday 18th May of 2016, at 11 o’clock, in the Università degli Studi dell’Insubria (Room Granero-Porati, via Dunant,3). In the meeting, that will be an occasion to introduce Wikimania to the Students of the Ateneo of Varese, will participate Iolanda Pensa, General Manager Wikimania 2016, Roberto Maroni, President of Lombardy region, Rinaldo Ballerio, President of Elmec Informatica and Luca Spada, Managing Director and President of Eolo SpA.
