UNITA’ di PRODUZIONE MUSICALE (Musical Production Unit) is a project by Enrico Gabrielli and Sergio Giusti developed in collaboration with Enece Video (Pietro De Tilla, Elvio Manuzzi, Tommaso Perfetti) and Pietro Leone.

A work that is halfway between a documentary film and a performance. A simulation of 8 hours of industrial factory activity where, instead of working a lathe or building bolts, music will be written and performed following an assembly line shift rotation.

To achieve this, we will employ sixty people as musicians/workers who will perform in an industrial area, coordinated by a superintendent. Once they will have worn their work overalls, half of them will have to write music on thirty desks while the other half waits in front of thirty music stands. Once the writing is over, those who were waiting will have to perform the result in a sort of extemporary mass interplay. Timetables will be set strictly, and once the shift is over the two teams will trade places: the composers will become the performers. And so on, exchanging roles throughout until the end of the workday.

This is not a game: realistic break times and timetables will be set, lunch break included. And everything will be filmed, including the practical discussions, the comments, the doubts, the weariness. The documentary film squad will only watch and record, without intervening or interviewing.

The musicians are not there to perform, they are there to work: the entire operation will therefore occur behind closed doors.

By activating this operation halfway between a psychological experiment, an artistic performance and a musical improvisation, all we want to do is examine the phenomenon and provide an open document. No point to prove, then: each individual should draw their own valid conclusions on what it means to work with music and art.

This is because a factory,with its mass production, doesn’t expect a simple worker to have any specific expertise. And egos are levelled down by a common regulation.

UNITA’ di PRODUZIONE MUSICALE is a complex operation where just the cost of realization, requiring materials, instruments and workforce, is extremely hefty. Due to the project’s hybrid and experimental nature, involving different worlds and different kinds of expertise, it is almost impossible to find a possible institutional investor. This is why the only realistic option has been involving the public who will believe in this project, supporting it directly through a crowdfunding system.
