Man who nearly died in a fire is being charged with illegal entering and occupying

 The local police have saved a man from certain death, but the homeless man is now being charged with illegally entering and occupying the building. This is the paradoxical result of the intervention by a local police patrol, who, on the morning of 12 December, while observing and checking the area in order to prevent and suppress crimes against public property, noticed smoke coming from the first floor of a building in Via Ferrini (archive photo).

The attention of the policemen was immediately drawn by smoke coming from a building they thought was abandoned, the entrances of which had been walled-up. They found a small opening in the wall that was carefully concealed, and it was through this that the policemen managed to enter. Behind the door of a room, they found the air thick with smoke, and an unconscious man near a bin, where a fire was crackling away. The rescue services were immediately called, and the man was taken away for necessary treatment, although his condition did not cause any concern.

But what could have been a story with a happy ending, has had a bitter conclusion. The man is being taken to court, on a charge of illegally entering and occupying a building. This is what also happened last year, when some people tried to escape the freezing weather by bedding down in the city hospital basement. This winter, like the previous one, the city has been unable to set up a warm, safe dormitory for the homeless, and the only place they can go is the railway station lounge (which is without heating). But on this occasion, someone almost died.
