The Regional President is closely following the negotiations between trade unions and the American multinational.

On 13 October 2013, the President of Lombardy Region, Roberto Maroni, was at the headquarters of Whirlpool in Comerio, together with the councillor for production, Mario Melazzini, to sign a protocol with the American multinational, to increase the appeal of Lombardy and to attract production investments to the region.

The aim of the protocol was to create the best conditions for investing in Lombardy, starting with research and innovation. On that occasion, the Regional President mentioned Professor Marco Biagi and the lifelong learning of the workers that had been expelled from the labour market, claiming, “The €250 million that Whirlpool is investing in the area, in the next 4 years, will also go to rehire 300 employees.”

Just two years since that agreement, Whirlpool has decided to make heavy layoffs, also in Varese Province, following the merger with Indesit. “We agreed a number of actions with the company, which have enabled Whirlpool to invest in Lombardy, and we want this investment to stay and even be enhanced,” Maroni said.
