A plaque dedicated to the supporter of Garibaldi

A plaque to commemorate Francesco Daverio.

The engineer, a patriot involved in the Five Days of Milan, and a pro-Garibaldi volunteer, to whom the Technical Institute at Via Bertolone No, 13 was dedicated in 1887, is being remembered again on 26 May. As part of the festivities for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the association “Varese per l’Italia” (Varese for Italy) is continuing the celebrations, and, on the anniversary of the Battle of Varese, is paying tribute to Daverio, with a commemorative plaque, which will go under the bust that is already there, on which the story of the pro-Garibaldi patriot will be written

“This lovely initiative will involve the school. We’re very happy that the students are going to be made aware of the history of the Resurgence and of the Unification of Italy,” the president of the association, Luigi Barion, explained during a press conference this morning, Thursday 19 May, at which, Senator Maria Pellegatta and the headmaster of the institute, Giovanni Blasi, also took part. And that is not all. After the unveiling of the plaque, the students will be invited to take part in the conference at the Istituto De Filippi, where the history of the Resurgence will be reconstructed, in the presence of the Director of the Provincial Schools Office, Claudio Merletti, Dr Blasi, and the headmistress of the “Cairoli” High School, Daniela Tam Baj, starting at 10 a.m.

Furthermore, two students from the technical institute will be given the chance to go to Rome, accompanied by their teacher and by the association, to visit the sites of the Resurgence. In Varese, also on 26 May, an event will be held to bless the flag of the association “Varese per l’Italia”, in the church in Biumo Inferiore, with Paola Bassini, the widow of the lawyer Giovanni Valcavi, also present; the flag will then be flown from the bell tower. Then, on 28 May, the celebrations will continue, with a large procession around the town.
