The 2015 Giro d’Italia, a “cross-border” stage that also goes through Varese

The 2015 Giro d’Italia will also be honouring Varese; the 18th leg of the 2015 Giro d’Italia (which was presented today) will be covering more than 40 km in our province (see photo; a scene from the 2014 Giro).

The eighteenth stage (on 28 May) of the 2015 Giro d’Italia is one of the two stages that also go through Canton Ticino, from Melide, near Lugano, to Verbania. It is a mid-mountain stage, with a climb up Monte Ologno-Piancavallo, before the final descent to the finishing line, on the shore of Lake Maggiore.

The 2015 Giro d’Italia will be coming through the province in the morning, in the first part of the day, between km 13 (on the national border) and km 53 (the bridge, in Sesto Calende, over the Ticino River, on the border with Piedmont); considering the distance of the only demanding section of the day, in the absence of any breakaways, there will be time to see the group go by at not too fast a pace. The 18th stage of the 2015 Giro d’Italia, will first go through Valceresio, then Varese town(stations and Casbeno), followed by the area of the lakes of Varese and Comabbio,then a short section of the Sempione, from Vergiate as far as the crossing of the Ticino River, into Piedmont.

The 2015 Giro d’Italia starts in Liguria, with the San Lorenzo to Mare-Sanremo time trial, on 9 May, and ends in Milan on 31 May, with the last leg for the sprinters, of 178 km.
