From Thursday, 17th December, for a week; this is one of the moves to reduce pollution, but it is also useful for people who are going to Milan for visiting Christmas markets and doing shopping.

Only one ATM ticket for the whole day, at the cost of €1.50; it is the solution of the Milan municipality and ATM to face the emergency of the PM10, which has been out of control for days, after weeks of good weather.

Starting from 14th December until 24th December, citizens of Milan will be able to use the BikeMi service for free. Additionally, trams and buses will be free for those who take children to school.

From 17th to 24th December il will be possible to travel by tram, bus and subway with just one €1.50 ticket (or suburban fare). All these tickets, which normally are valid for a single journey, will last for an unlimited number of rides until the end of the day on which it was validated. These measures are applied to the underground and overground service run by ATM and they include urban, interurban and combined tickets, and also the validation of the 10-ride carnet. The decision has been made by the Milan municipality upon agreement with ATM.

Pierfrancesco Maran, Council Member for Transports and Environment, said: “The municipality decided to add a new extraordinary measure for the containment of pollution, starting on 17th December. This is to increase the use of public transportation, after the solutions adopted last week, including free access to BikeMi service and to overground transportation for those who take children to school. People of Milan have developed a great sensibility regarding environmental issues, and we’re sure  that, in these days, they will accept our invitation to travel more by tram, bus and subway, leaving their car home.”

Bruno Rota, chairman and general manager at ATM, stated: “From the beginning, ATM was ready to adopt drastic measures to face pollution, and we’ll do everything we can. ATM has already started working on its IT systems, so that everything is going to work at its best on all public transports. The main measures to fight smog are promoting the use of public transports and investing on them.”

However, the anti-smog measures, which were adopted by the Province in 2012, will still be valid in the whole city area. The Milan municipality applied these measures with the 6/2012 ordinance, as they are considered when the pollution rate is over 50μg/cubic metre of PM10 per day for 10 consecutive days.

The applied measures are as follows: Euro 3 diesel vehicles without particulate filter can not circulate in the city area from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm (for private use) and from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm (for businesses). Heating will be reduced by 1°C, from 20° to 19° (the law admits 2° tolerance) in buildings, and the factories will stay on for 12 hours instead of 14.

Concerning temperatures, shops will also be required not to use devices that keep doors open, in order to facilitate customers’ entry. Eventually, checks on circulating vehicles will be strengthened, using even opacimeters that will measure exhaust emissions.
