Shortage of €3 million; the council is deciding what to cut

 There is a shortage of about €3 million in the council’s budget, a sum reserved for current expenses, that should have been provided by central government with the receipts from the local property tax, IMU, but that has been reduced because a part of it has been allocated to the realignment fund for the Italian councils. This means that Rome has not given back to Varese all the money that the town council had collected. Now, the council has at least two problems. In the section concerning expenses for investments, the stability pact forbids using money that should be used to begin public works. These include, for example, the payment for starting work in Via Sant’Imerio, in Bosto; also this morning, this site was completely abandoned, creating problems and tailbacks. In the section concerning current expenses, in which there is now a €3 million shortage, a decision must be made on what should be done. This morning, there was a meeting of the town council, to discuss the situation, which is considered to be thorny. The mayor and the town council decided to adjourn the session and to come to the next meeting with a majority agreement. This means that the Northern League and the centre-right PDL party must hold meetings beforehand, to decide what to cut. Once they have come to an agreement, they will return to the town council, “with the political scissors closed”.
