In the province the majority are women

Figures are related to October 9, 2011, the reference date of the 15th census of the population that took place in Italy, and are available on " Osserva"  the statistics portal of the Chamber of Commerce. We discover, in this way that inhabitants who are living in the province of Varese amount to 871,886 units, meaning 9% of the total of Lombardy.

 

The increase that is due only to the foreign component is 7.3% more than 2011, when 812,477 inhabitants were counted. In fact in the decade between the last two censi the population of Italian citizens has increased by 16,713 units ( +2.1%), and the foreign population by 42,696 (182.5%). So on 100 new residents in the Varese province, 72 are foreigners. An increase on the whole in line with the Lombard average (+7.4%) but lower with the foreign average, that in our region registered +196.4%.

 

More women than men

 

in the province of Varese the majority is composed of women. There are 94.1 men for every 100 women, ( 422,752 men and 449,134 women). In 117 municipalities of our territory, the number of women is higher than that of resident men. A curiosity: the highest amount of men is in Marzio ( 116,4) while the lowest is in Vaddasca ( 81.2).

 

The population gets older

 

The ageing phenomenon characterizes the 2001-2011 period: the percentage of population of 65 years old and more passes from 18.2% ( 148,023 people) to 21.3% (185,788) in the space of a decade, showing a variation of 25.5%,higher than the one of Lombardy, which is of 22.9%. Also the " great olders" meaning people with more than 80 years old, are increasing their weight on the total of the resident population: we pass from 4.2% of 2001 to 5.9% of 2011. Now they reach 51,608 units. In the province of Varese, live, then, 237 centenarians , equal to 10% of those of Lombardy. They have more than doubled in the decade between the censi ( they were 110 in 2001). To confirm that women live more, the 91% (215) of centenarians  are women.

 

7 out of 10 residents live in municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants

The resident population in the province of Varese is distributed for 23% in towns with no more than 5,000 inhabitants and for 46.4% in those between 5,001 and 20,000 inhabitants. This means that 7 out of 10 residents live in locations below 20,000 inhabitants.

The largest and the smallest municipalities

Concerning the provincial area, we find that the smallest municipality is Duno with only 159 residents, while the largest, in term of legal population, is Varese with  79,793 inhabitants, registered at October 9, 2011. The official Census put in second place, with 79,692 ,Busto Arsizio and at the third Gallarate with 50,456 inhabitants. Saronno follow them with 38,598 and Cassano Magnano with 21,386 residents.

Over 66,000 foreign residents in the province of Varese

The foreigners who have been surveyed in the province of Varese are 66,088: 7% of those live in Lombardy. 27.5% of them are aged under 19 years, 67.4% is in the class 20-59 years and 5% is over sixty years. Even in this case the women (53%) are more than the men (47%). During the decade 2001-2011 the foreign population that usually dwells in our country has increased by +182.5%, passing from 23,392 to 66,088 units.  The percentage of foreigners is thus increased from 28.8 to 75.8 for every 1,000 resident population surveyed. This situation, however, caused to Varese the loss of a position in the regional standings, from the sixth place in 2001 to the seventh in 2011, where the first place belongs to the province of Brescia with 125.5 foreigners per 1,000 inhabitants.

The municipality of Varese with the greatest foreign presence is Ranco, with 181 foreigners per 1,000 inhabitants, while Castelseprio has only 15. In absolute terms, the largest number is in Varese, where they are almost 8,500.
