Impastato: “Think with your own heads.”

The brother of Peppino Impastato, who was killed by the Mafia in 1978, met the students of Tradate, as part of the education project about legality.

A Villa Truffini brimming with students welcomed Giovanni Impastato, the brother of Peppino, who was killed by the Mafia in 1978, at the age of nearly 30. The conference on the morning of Tuesday April 12, at which all of the final-year classes of the city’s high schools were present, and which was entitled “I’m not scared”, had been organised by the “Don Milani” High School in Tradate, and was chaired by the head teacher, Adriana Pradi Battaglia. Ms Battaglia is the international coordinator of the European project on bullying, and this conference was part of the series of initiatives specially organised.

Impastato spoke about his brother, Peppino, to the students, who had all previously seen the film I cento passi (One hundred steps), by Tullio Giordana, which deals with Peppino Impastato’s fight. “There was respect fro the Mafia in my family, too,” Giovanni said. “We fight the Mafia starting with our consciences, and with the values that must not be compromised. Our values are not negotiable. If people are to be active, they must know how to act, because what we are told to do is not always fair; you have to think with your own minds. My brother was your age when he started to fight the Mafia.”

“It went very well,” said Miss Battaglia, expressing her satisfaction. “This meeting is part of education project about legality which we’ve organised, and we’ve had great participation by the students, who seem to be increasingly interested and involved.”
