Thanksgiving Day: Comerio celebrates the twinning with the USA at the dining table

The council of Comerio is looking overseas, and in response to the initiative, 141Expo, being promoted by VareseNews, inviting all North American citizens, and not only, to the traditional Thanksgiving Day celebration, on the evening of 27 November, in the restaurants in Comerio, with a special American menu.

“We have joined the ambitious, visionary initiative of VareseNews, Expo 141, which creates a twinning between the communities in Varese Province with one of the States taking part in Expo 2015,” said the Mayor, Silvio Aimetti. “As part of this initiative, the village of Comerio has been twinned with the United States of America and, taking its cue from the theme of the World Exhibition, is responding to this initiative, by “nourishing” in full American style.”

The council of Comerio accepted the challenge and, thanks to the local restaurants, has organised an “ad hoc” menu to give all Americans, Canadians, and anyone who is curious or who sympathises with the Stars and Stripes a special, typically American evening … without having to take a 7-hour flight!

The Mayor, Silvio Aimetti, stressed the importance of this initiative and the great opportunity to promote and give value to the cultural initiatives, historical places and tradition of Comerio. Moreover, he would like to achieve an actual twinning between the community of Comerio and that of Benton Harbour, which is the historical headquarters of the American company, Whirlpool.

To find the origins of Thanksgiving Day, we need to go back to 1621, when the colonists from Plymouth and the Indian tribe of the Wampanoags celebrated the festival for the autumn harvest together, on the day that is now known as the first Thanksgiving to be celebrated in the American colonies. That meal, which was organised to celebrate the harvest, became the symbol of cooperation and interaction between the English colonists and the tribes of the native Americans. In the following centuries, the Thanksgiving Day celebration spread throughout the country, and is still celebrated today, as President Lincoln said in 1863, when he established that it should take place every year, on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving Day is very important for US citizens, who traditionally cook a turkey, which they then offer to their neighbours. The basic concept of this day is solidarity.
