The gardens are lit up, Christmas has come to Varese

On the afternoon of Friday 2 December, the Christmas lights in the Palazzo Estense Gardens were switched on, giving the official start to the events organised in town.

The Estense Gardens have been lit up for the Christmas festivities. On Friday 2 December, the lights in the Palazzo Estense Gardens were switched on, marking the official start to the numerous events in town, leading up to Christmas.

Mayor Attilio Fontana and the Councillor for Territorial Marketing and Tourist Promotion, Sergio Ghiringhelli, did the honours, together with Roberto Tanzi, the director of ASCOM Varese, Gianni Lucchina, the director of the trade association Confesercenti Varese, as well as many townsfolk, who had waited for the ribbon to be cut before being able to see the Estense Gardens’ new look.

“Once more, Varese has shown that, despite the crisis, with everyone working together, a lot can be done,” the Mayor explained. There is, indeed, a full calendar of events that will take place in the city centre, and in the various neighbourhoods. From the street markets in every village, to the Christmas Village in Biumo Inferiore, to the Christmas Palace, the competition for cribs, the Christmas concerts, and the live nativity scene, there will be something for everyone during December and the first days of January. The switching on of the Estense Garden lights was a meaningful, but also spectacular event, which has given the city a magical atmosphere in the lead up to Christmas, and which ended with a lovely glass of mulled wine and some roasted chestnuts.
