AlpTransit, here is Ispra’s the new maxi-flyover

The three existing level crossings will be closed; cars will have only one compulsory route.

Ispra alptransit

No more level crossings or barriers. Ispra is the second town, where work will be carried out to adapt the road network near the railway. This work is second in the to-do list drawn up by Varese Province, together with the work in Luino (planning for the latter was by the Italian Rail network). This second project is ready and we can show you.

The work entails the closure of all three existing level crossings and the building of pedestrian underpasses 4 metres away. Drivers will have only one road, a flyover cornering between Via Schuman and Via Aldo Moro. This revolutionary change to the road network will have considerable implications, also because the road will start near the JRC. The expected cost is about €7 million. The work will start by the end of 2017.

The arrival of the AlpTransit, the international high-speed freight train, will affect the next few years. Trains will have to start running, without interruption, by 2022. Switzerland has paid €120 million to renew the ballast of the line in Italy and the tunnels in Varese Province. This section is part of the Rotterdam-Genoa freight corridor, of which the AlpTransit tunnel is the most innovative part. In Italy, there are 35 projects to be completed, in particular, the closure of all of the level crossings on the Luino-Sesto Calende-Gallarate line. The Province estimates that it will take €80 million to close all 35 level crossings and to build flyovers and underpasses and put an end to dividing villages in two. Look at the Laveno underpass.
