DominioniThe visit by Doctor Okami Jiro, from the Osaka Medical Centre for Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases in Osaka, Japan, to Insubria University, in Varese, will last four weeks.
Doctor Okami is one of the world’s top experts in in vitro and in vivo chemo-sensitivity for lung cancer and for pleural mesothelioma.
Until 12 December, following the invitation by Lorenzo Dominioni and Andrea Imperatori, lecturers in Medicine and Surgery Department, Dr. Okami is coming to the Thoracic Surgery Research Centre, Surgical Sciences Department, as a visiting professor, and is giving 12 seminars for research students and for physicians specialising at the School of Thoracic Surgery, General Surgery and Respiratory System Diseases.
“Dr. Okami’s visit to the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery consolidates the profitable cultural and scientific exchange that already exists between the Thoracic Surgery Research Centre, Department of Surgical Sciences of Insubria University and Thoracic Surgery and the Osaka Medical Centre for Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases,” explains Dr. Dominioni, “within the contest of research on themes of mutual interest, such as: lung cancer screening, pleural mesothelioma, and the treatment of pulmonary metastases.
Japan is the country with the longest life expectancy in the world, where there are a number of centres of excellence in the field of applied medical research, including the Osaka Medical Centre for Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases, which is also the Japanese centre for mass oncology screening. “And the Thoracic Surgery Research Centre of Insubria University has been involved in lung cancer screening for more than twelve years, with the PRE.DI.CA Project,” Dr. Dominioni continues. “It will certainly be useful to compare our results with the over thirty-year experience of the Japanese research centre”.

The Department of Thoracic Surgery, in Osaka, where Doctor Okami carries out his clinical and research work, is also in the forefront of mini-invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques used in the diagnosis and treatment of lung and pleural diseases.
