Obama’s speech: “Al Qaeda will not be persuaded by negotiations to lay down their arms.”
“We mustn’t delude ourselves, there is evil in the world; a non-violent movement wouldn’t have stopped Hitler’s armies, and Al Qaeda will not be persuaded by negotiations to lay down their arms”. In his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, in the first part, where he spoke about war and about the war that as “the president who has sworn to protect and defend my country” he has to fight, Barak Obama stated that “the instruments of war have a role in keeping peace. … Saying that violence is sometimes necessary is not cynicism but the acknowledgement of history, of man’s imperfections and of the limits of reason,” he added, emphasising that “no matter how necessary a war might be, it will always be a tragedy; it will never be glorious, or something to be proud of.”
