The Copenhagen underground, which is run by a Milanese company, is the best in the world

The best underground system in the world is Italian run. It is the one of Copenhagen, which has been managed by the Milanese transport company, ATM, since January 2008, and it will be the “model” for the next underground line in Milan, the M5.

During the ceremony in London, during which the excellence of underground services was acknowledged, two awards were given to the ATM-run system. The Copenhagen system had already received most important award, the “World’s Best Metro”, in 2008. After receiving the award in 2009, the ATM-run system has been confirmed as the best “driverless” line.

More than 70 underground systems in 40 countries throughout the world were judged in the “Transport Oscars”, which, for the last three years, have been awarded to the most efficient and innovative underground systems. Other cities that received acknowledgement include London (Best Metro in Europe), San Paolo (Best Metro in the Americas) and Singapore (Best Metro in Asia-the Pacific).

Thus, the excellence of the Copenhagen system has been confirmed. Operating since 19 October 2002, it has been managed by ATM since January 2008; it has had more than two years of successes with 47 million passengers in 2008 and over 50 million in 2009. The system has 21 km of track, 22 stations, and provides a service that runs 24/7.

The Copenhagen underground employs about 290 people, including service, maintenance, customer service, security, communication and administration staff.

This underground system will continue to have an Italian management for another 5 years, starting from 2010, as the management company Metroservice (an ATM-Ansaldo STS company) has been confirmed.
