The courage of Naima, who denounced the act of violence

In June she was beaten by her husband with a lever, she denounced the attack in her family. She learned Italian in a few months and today she’s back in the courtroom to denounce her husband

Naima is short, has beautiful features underlined by a light make-up. But four months ago that same face was an unrecognizable mask, covered with bruises and wounds. Naima (this is a fictional name) is 23 years-old, originally comes from Morocco and in June was savagely beaten by her husband: this morning appeared in the courtroom of Gallarate for the hearing which accuses the young husband, N.K. (accused of mistreatments and grievious bodily harm, he is defended by lawyer Talamone).

The story of this young woman is an example: until a few months ago she was closed in her home, segregated from her husband, and she knew just a few words in Italian. Then, after the attack given by the man with a bricklayer level, an angular and heavy tool made of metal, she decided to denounce him: today she speaks Italian correctly and the courage that she showed in June by denouncing the act of violence to the Police Station of Gallarate, became stronger. She left early in the morning from the protected community where she lives with her son and she appeared in court with her lawyers, Vittorio and Dario Celiento. The lawyers of Busto Arsizio accepted to represent the plaintiff for free, in a trial which can represent a positive signal for lots of women( of any nationality) exposed to domestic violence. This is also a story which had a certain significance inside the Muslim community: Naima’s situation brought to the attention of the community from the people in charge in the community, who condemned in sermons the act of violence, but who collaborated even with the police in order to build a relationship of trust with the young woman, who until a few months ago did not speak Italian.
