Liuc, top of the class in the new academic year

For the first time, new rector Valter Lazzari presented the challenges of the university in Castellanza and the great results that have been achived during its twenty-year presence in the area, thanks to which, it is placed at the top of Almalaurea league tables.

Inaugurazione anno accademico 2011 alla LiucLiuc opens its 21st academic year during a financial crisis period, but is hoping for the best. This Monday morning, new rector Valter Lazzari, wearing a gown and together with the Dean of Engineering Giacomo Buonanno and the Dean of Law School Mario Zanchetti, officially opened the 2011/2012 academic year, after the Chancellor Paolo Lamberti. He had to sum up the situation of the university, which has hand an increase in the number of registered students and also in teaching quality: “More than 7 thousand students have graduated from this university during the past twenty years, 36 are doing their PhDs and many of them are today part of our university professors” said Lamberti focusing on the university ripeness “but we can’t  report on  the university financial statements just with these numbers: more meaningful are the numbers of the charts drawn-up by organisations like Censis and Almalaurea, which place Liuc at the top.

Rector Lazzari, instead, focused on the quality of the university services, giving thanks to the administrative technical staff together with Lombardy Region, Unione degli Industriali (industrialists’ union), private citizens and other organisations that each year finance grants and technologic investments: “Liuc considers highly all the figures who keep it very much alive” Lazzari said “and it does this according to three pivotal principles: application, ability and competence, community.” Lazzari focused on the importance of the internationalisation of this university and announced that, in addition to Erasmus and Summer Schools in China and USA, now new destinations will be added, like India, Brazil and Russia. Their application is the continuous extension of the course programme abroad, but they also want to keep degree courses times the shortest as possible, among other Italy courses.

Ability and competence, instead, focus on not dividing up the course programme, a tendency that has affected some Italian universities and in being capable of increasing research funds (that also this year has increased by 10%) for institutional and commercial research. Finally, the community is the third university strength: “Liuc doesn’t forget about its students, and neither about its alumni, who keep in touch with Liuc, and vice versa.” The community idea is very strong in Liuc and, in order to strengthen it, Lazzari gave thanks also to his predecessors Andrea Taroni and Alessandro Sinatra.

In conclusion, before starting to talk about economics and the destiny of the Eurozone, also Sebastiano Signò, representative of Liuc Board of Directors, spoke. The young man focused on two features: the financial crisis that is spreading across Europe and together with it, Italy and the situation of its university students. Signò appealed to politicians “so that they commit themselves to finding solutions to the Italian crisis (Pd deputy Daniele Marantelli called it on during a final speech)” and he wished “that the solution found by the board of directors for managing the inner Campus of university solves age-old problems and inefficiencies that it brings to people who live it, for example the students”.
