At Carla’s funeral, the mayor cried from the pulpit

The crime of the severed hands; great local participation at the funeral of the victim.

The ceremony was crowded, the church, overflowing. The mayor cried from the pulpit, there was a long line of people present to accompany Carla Molinari to the cemetery. The flying squad filmed everything and took photographs. Among the crowd, there was also the daughter of Carlo Piccolomo, Tina, the woman who has accused her father of killing her mother, and who is convinced that he has killed again.

These were some of the moments during an afternoon that was important for Cocquio Trevisago, the village that bade its last farewell to Carla Molinari, who was killed on 5 November in her home. Monsignor Luigi Stucchi prayed for the woman, and told the people that the time has come to “end this painful and distressing chapter.” Don Ervè Simeoni called for comprehension and remorse, and invited the mayor, who was visibly upset, to the pulpit. Mario Ballarin made a few broken statements, and then burst into tears. At the ceremony, there were relatives, cousins and friends, but, above all, ordinary people: the local council, the archiepiscopal vicar, Don Stucchi, who assisted in celebrating the mass, and many of the detectives that had carried out the investigation; the flying squad, first of all (with the head of police) and the local police of the mid Verbano area. The military police from the local station were also present.

But it was, above all, the long procession of people that accompanied the body to the cemetery that gave the sensation of local participation, of a village that, as the mayor reminded everyone, had not known the victim well, but had, in some way, come to love her over the last few months, because “she did not deserve to die like that.”
