Lombardy: discounts on diesel and the most expensive petrol are disappearing
From tomorrow, it will be more expensive for residents near the border to fill up; the discount is dropping from 33 to 15 cents in zone A, and from 25 to 7 cents in zone B.

The rise in petrol prices across the border, due to the fluctuation of the franc, which has been freed from the fixed exchange rate with the euro, is also having an effect on the pockets of consumers here at home.
Today, Lombardy Region announced that the discount for filling up on diesel will no longer be recognised in the zones bordering Switzerland; this should come into effect on 1 February.
There will also be a reduction in the size of the discount for filling up on petrol: from Friday 23 January, the discount will be €0.15 (currently, €0.33) for zone A, and €0.07 (currently, €0.25) for zone B.
The Region will reintroduce the diesel discount if prices vary and the gap exceeds €0.05.
The discount is an old friend of the people of Varese and Lombardy who reside a short distance from the border with Switzerland; it was introduced several years ago, to discourage motorists from going across the border to fill up, thereby penalising the Italian petrol stations that have to compete with the lower prices applied at the pumps in Canton Ticino.
