Flight ban, JRC also affected

The paralysis of European air travel, due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano, has also caused problems at the JCR, in Ispra. Over the last few days, more than nine meetings had been planned in the centre’s laboratories, including one of great importance, which 180 guests from all over Europe were to attend. In the end, only 10 managed to arrive, so work was essentially stalled. And of the 300 general visitors expected during these days, only half of them came.

As many readers have pointed out, the paralysis of the Research Centre, which brings many visitors to our province every year, is also creating several problems for sideline businesses, particularly for hotels and restaurants, which have been empty. The work of the former Euratom has always created sideline business for a variety of sectors; in the case of accommodation and catering, eighty per cent of the rooms are booked by Centre employees, nine months of the year. Fortunately, everything will start moving again, when the skies are clear.
