Medical reports, sent directly to your smart phone

The online system for accessing your medical records has been updated. The smart card reader is being packed away to be replaced by a more immediate technology, one that works with text messages.

PINs, PUKs, informed consent, dedicated smart card readers: Lombardy Regional council is making it easier to access medical data from your computer.

The old model, which was often complicated, is making room for a faster and more immediate procedure, also because contact will be by text messages.

The start of the new online system to access your own medical records still requires you to register, signing the informed consent form, as the first step. The procedure, however, is faster: with your regional service card (Carta Regionale dei Servizi – CRS), you should go to the offices where the operator will enter your CRS, ask for your mobile number and make you sign the consent form. After a few minutes, you will get a sheet of paper with the first part of your code, which, once you have logged on from your computer, can be changed at will.

In order to access your own medical data, you need to visit the regional web page: www.crs.regione.lombardia.it/ssc. A window will appear asking you to enter the last ten digits of your health card identification number, then you must enter your password, which is made up of a fixed part, which you received at the office, which may be changed at will, and of the number that you receive by text message on your mobile phone. This code remains valid for three minutes, and you will receive a new one on your mobile phone every time you want to access the CRS website.

Once logged on, you can tick the option “notifica referti” (“notify of report”), which will allow you to receive a text message on your mobile phone whenever your test results are published online. Thanks to the online displaying, the user does not have to collect a paper copy. Everyone has a duty to look at the results of his tests, otherwise, if he does not collect them within a month, he will have to pay the full cost of the service, and not just the standard medical service charge. When the results are published, the GP will receive an email, with which he will be able to access the online files.

In order to “register”, the citizen can go to the local health authority branches in the twelve districts, or to the three hospital authorities; at the Varese hospital authority, it is possible to register at single booking centres (centri unici di prenotazione – CUP), at the blood centres of the Circolo Hospital (but only in the afternoon) in the outpatient departments in Via Monte Rosa and in Arcisate, at the hospital authorities in Gallarate and Busto, at the single booking centres and blood centres. So far, 460 cards have already been activated by the local health authority, 1800 in Gallarate, 3700 in Varese, and 5000 in Busto.

With this online system, in addition to accessing medical records, it will be possible to book appointments and medical tests throughout Lombardy, choose/change GPs, and check the personal income exemptions.

This system, which has been produced by Lombardia Informatica, can be activated using the regional service card which, however, is about to be replaced. When the regional service card naturally expires, the new national service card, which is blue and has the same functions, will be sent directly to your home. All you have to do is reactivate the service with the new card, and you will be able to consult your reports from home, as well as book tests and appointments conveniently from your home computer, tablet or even smartphone.
