Northern League and PDL, agreement reached for elections

After tension in the last few days, the names of mayoral candidates for Saronno, Somma Lombardo, Luino, Laveno and Samarate have been decided by common consent.

The alliance between the Northern League and the right-wing party, “Popolo delle Libertà” (PDL), has been confirmed for the next local elections, at the end of March. These elections involve 11 towns in the Varese province, and the agreement has been reached in all of the largest towns. After the threat by the Northern League’s provincial secretary, Stefano Candiani, that his party would run alone in the election, the two groups have met in the last few hours and agreed on the names of the mayoral candidates.

The two parties had to solve several problems. In Saronno, the largest town involved in the elections, the Northern League have confirmed their support for Michele Marzorati (PDL). In Somma Lombardo, the League have agreed on the outgoing mayor, Guido Colombo, an independent, who will also be supported by the PDL. In Luino, the League had asked to break with the outgoing administration, and the two parties agreed on the provincial councillor, Andrea Pollicini (PDL). The situation is different in Laveno, where the candidate is from the Northern League, another former provincial councillor, Graziella Giacon. An agreement has also been reached in Samarate, where the two parties decided that the former Northern League provincial secretary, Leonardo Tarantino, should run, with the support of lay part of the PDL.

“The alliance has been confirmed with our satisfaction, in both the political and representative terms of the alliance,” explained Candiani with satisfaction. “Now, everything must be approved and defined by the local secretaries throughout the whole province. It is they who will have to decide on the details of the programme and on the other candidates. We are very satisfied because common sense has prevailed. There had been tension because times were getting longer and longer, but everything was resolved in only one meeting.”

“There was tension only during the meeting” said Nino Caianiello, one of the PDL coordinators. “We explained our positions, there was no discussion. We were on the same wavelength, and we are very satisfied.”
