The hospital changes: there will be no geriatric ward and Santa Maria will close.

The Varese hospital will have a “Day Center 2”, announced the President of the Region, Roberto Maroni  when taking part at the inauguration of the “Day Center 1”,  haematology and psychiatry.

They decided to spend €16.8 million to build a new block where now there is the geriatric ward, that is a crumbling and abandoned building. Also the Santa Maria clinic will be destroyed, which is the building that you see coming from Via Lazio and where there is the blood sample unit, the radiology and orthopaedic department.

In a couple of weeks, technical bureaucratic times, there will be the official announcement of a news which is quite sure, “We have €190 million to spend for the health facilities and my technicians evaluated projects for a total of €400 million. We made a choice and the project of Varese was convincing,” said Maroni.

But what will there be in the new building? The health services now hosted in the Santa Maria hospital, from the blood sample unit dedicated to Giovanni Valcavi, to  the radiology and orthopaedic units, which were all opened in 2011 for a total of about €1.5 million.

The choice of demolishing it is related to the excessive costs needed to revamp each floor based on the new act. In the future building, which is going to be smaller, there will also be room for dentistry that is moving from the Velate building, the Brest Unit.

Good news for the Sant’Antonio Hospital in Gallarate too, €4.5 million will be given to rebuild the first aid department.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the new psychiatry section, a department that has waited to be rebuilt for years and that cost €1.9 million. The Governor has visited the three-floored dwelling of the Day Center 1, which cost roughly €20 million, 16 of which in building costs. The President Maroni then uncovered a plate: the new CUP building, on the second floor of the Day Center, was dedicated to Ferdinanda Cattaneo Babini, a patron whom the hospital loves.
