Northern League’s “Obama” plays Sister Act

The next show by the “Tina Franzi – Amici del Teatro” theatre company in Viggiù will have a very special guest star. The company will make its debut with the “Trasloco Show”, on Saturday 6 February, after a break of two years, in the SOMS hall in Via Borromeo. And, among the stars of the group, which, for 38 years, has performed shows in dialect, there will also be an exceptional dancer, Sandy Cane, the Mayor of the town, who achieved national fame by becoming the Northern League’s first black mayor.
“This year, our company will be unique, thanks to its extra dancer,” explained the director and head comic, Pier Andrea De Vittori, who has divided his time between work and the Viggiù footlights for over 20 years. “Our Mayor has very kindly agreed to become part of the dance group. And she’s no ordinary mayor, but Sandy Cane, Italy’s first Afro-American mayor, who everyone knows as the Northern League’s “Obama”. Sandy will play the part of Whoopy Goldberg in a dance inspired by the film Sister Act. It will be a surprise for everyone! I’ve already seen her in rehearsals, and I have to say that she moves very, very well.”
Music, ballet, imitations, gags and comedy scenes that make fun of everyday life will be the ingredients of the show that Sandy Cane is taking part in. The choreography is by Savina Daolio, who directs a strong group of 15 dancers, including the Mayor.
On stage, there will be no fewer than 25 actors speaking dialect. “During the day, all members of the company work and study, but in the evenings, they put away their day clothes, which, in some cases, are very serious, to dress up as the strange characters that fill our shows,” the director explains. “We do it to entertain, and to have fun, and our audiences see and appreciate this. The amateur component adds value, because there is often much more passion in amateur shows than in professional ones.”
The shows will be performed on Saturday 6 February, Saturday 13 February, Sunday 21 February and Saturday 27 February, at 8.45 p.m., in the SOMS hall in Via Borromeo, in Viggiù. Tickets can be bought from the Daolio stationer’s-newsagent’s, in Viggiù.
