Broadband on the way

Work is in progress, also on the telecommunications infrastructure; the optical fibre has come to Varese. With the agreement between Fastweb and the town council, the work to bring ultra-broadband (downloading at speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s) to families and companies has started. 

To bring ultra-broadband to Varese, the company is laying about 55 km of optical fibre, which will link over 160 roadside cabinets that contain the latest generation electronics, reaching 33,000 families and companies. The fibre will be laid primarily in existing cable ducts, and new excavations of only 9 km in length will be necessary: the work has already started and will be finished by the end of November 2013.

"For a number of weeks now, the inhabitants of Varese may have noticed the work going on in town. Their goal is important: they’re necessary to have a service that is avant-garde, and essential if we are to become increasingly competitive,” explained the Mayor of Varese, Attilio Fontana. 

The investment for the network in Varese is about €6 million, €4.5 million of which is for the current plan for the fibre-optic linking of the roadside cabinets. The new network will cover the whole city, and it will be developed in the Centre, and the areas of Sant’Ambrogio, Bobbiate, San Fermo and Bizzozero. The work currently in progress is bringing the fibre from the central cabinets in the roads, near the houses of customers, using non-invasive excavating techniques, such as micro-trenches, which allow minimising the environmental impact and inconvenience for the people. "We decided to invest in Varese, because it’s in the most advanced areas of the country that the demand for high-speed, highly reliable connections is greatest. We’re convinced that ultra-broadband will help bring economic growth, and new competitiveness and prosperity to the area," said Danilo Vivarelli, Fastweb’s Consumer Division and Microbusiness Director.
