What education? And for what future?

A meeting at the language high school, Rosetum, with lecturers from the Advanced School for Language Mediators. Discussion about future strategies at a time of global crisis.

At a time in history, like this (in which the world economy is facing profound imbalances between the advanced West and the emerging East, in which globalization is placing a lot of responsibility on the political choices of Countries, but above all, at a time when collaboration is required between countries with common roots, but different histories, between firms and workers, and between older and younger generations), one of the few positive aspects of the “global crisis” is the fact that people have to face the fact that comprehending the economic problems is certainly complex, but also essential, particularly for the students of language subjects, who experience the dialogue between different languages and different cultures as something to be valued and a reason for mutual growth.

In the small teaching workshop organised in the Rosetum Institute, in Besozzo, the students of the language high school welcomed lecturers from the Advanced School for Language Mediators (Scuola Superiore per Mediatori Linguistici (SSML)) in Varese, in order to understand better the causes and possible responses, in Italy, to the economic crisis, but also in order to see to it that the feelings of pessimism and fear about the future give way to the wish to play a strong and active part in the solution to problems that are deeply rooted in the Italian society and economy.

After an outline of the recent history of the banking crises, of the debt of countries, and of the prospects for future generations, including courageous reforms and paths for growth shared by unions and businesses, which was given by Prof. Daniele Crotti, a lecturer in Economics at the SSML in Varese, the Rosetum students had the opportunity to experience the difficulties of choosing between government spending and tax revenues, in a group experiment-game that, for one day, make them members of parliament, voting on structural reforms that would impact the national budget.

We hope, in the future, that they too will contribute to creating ideas that revive the economic and social destinies of this country.
