Journey to the center of the Earth

A place that Jules Verne would have liked: the Remeron Cave

A place that  Jules Verne would have liked is surely the Remeron Cave. This place  really is just around the corner for accessibility – we are in Comerio – dedicated to those that love adventure and nature. Already known in 1800 but never explored until 1900 due to legends that presented the cave full of snakes and animals more or less fantastic, this cave was explored for the first time by Luigi Vittorio Bertarelli with Luigi Orrigoni, Don Giacomo Pensotti and Don Luigi Tadini in August 1900. The exploration discovered a small lake, 175 metres below, which took its name from the Lake Bertarelli. Over the next few years further explorations followed which allowed them to discover more chambers. You can admire these beautiful caves natural works such as la Chamber of the Stalactites and the Mizi chamber that is so large that its walls are lost in the shadows, in addition of course to Lake Bettarelli and 210 metres deep, the pond Binda.
In the cave was also placed a statue of the Madonnina of the Depths at an altitude of -50 m from the entrance, in the Large Room  (in 1926, then removed, restored and replaced for the reopening of the cave in 2004). The lights are LED so that the they don’t disturb the fauna and come turned off after every visit. There are guides who go around the cave and explain the story. Reaching this cave is very easy, in the car just take the S.S. 394 "East Verano" and you can park at the Mattello Fraction, for those wishing to reach the place by public transport, you can use the train: the FNM station (Trenord) – on the Milano-Varese-Laveno line – and the Barasso-Comerio one. In bus the route is covered by the Varese Bus companies Varese-Angera or Varese-Sesto Calende (n20) to the bus stop Comerio, that is found just at the beginning of the road that leads to the Mattello fraction and from there to the Remeron Cove.
